Before You Sketch: Start with a Design Program
When we begin a new home remodeling project with clients, one of the first things we ask is not, “What do you want the layout to look like?” Instead, we ask them to write down about ten sentences—sometimes even twenty—that describe what’s most important to them in this project.
This might seem unusual at first, but there’s a good reason.
In architectural terms, we call this the “program.” A program is essentially a written description of your goals, priorities, and lifestyle needs for your home—not a floor plan or sketch. It’s where we define what you’re really looking for: better flow for entertaining, more natural light in the morning, a quiet nook for reading, a connected indoor-outdoor living space, or room to grow for a family.
Too often, homeowners try to jump straight into drawing layouts, usually based on their existing floor plan. But starting this way can actually limit your imagination. When you sketch around what already exists, you subconsciously lock yourself into what’s already there—even if what’s there isn’t working.
Instead, we encourage homeowners to step back. Don’t think like a drafter or designer—think like the person who’s going to live in this space every day. What matters most to you? What experience do you want to have in your new home?
Once we understand that, then—and only then—do we begin translating those needs into spatial solutions. That’s when an experienced architect or designer can step in and help bring those ideas to life, often in ways you might not have imagined on your own.
This process creates better results. It also builds a stronger collaboration between the homeowner and the design team. So before you pick up a pencil or pull out graph paper, try writing ten honest sentences about what you really want from your remodeled home. That’s where the best designs begin.
